Profile

Mr Bayat is an Australian-trained Vascular Surgeon and experienced in endovascular surgery, with expertise in the management of a wide range of arterial and venous disease. He has an interest in the latest endovascular management of arterial and venous disease such as peripheral arterial disease, aneurysms, varicose veins, post thrombotic syndrome and complex venous disease.

Iman is proud of his Persian roots, international education, and upbringing. Mr Bayat completed his internship and basic surgical training in the United Kingdom, granting him membership to the Royal College of Surgeons of England. It was during his basic surgical training in Portsmouth and Torbay that Mr Bayat was first exposed to vascular surgery. “I fell in love with the elegant & precise surgical techniques of vascular surgery. Australia was well known for its excellent training in this field. I wanted the best and had to follow my dream,” Iman reminisces on why he chose vascular surgery.

After several years of additional general, paediatric, and vascular surgical training as registrar at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane, Mr Bayat entered the Vascular Surgery Training Program of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. During his vascular surgery training in Australia, Mr Bayat had the privilege of training at The Royal Perth, The Western and Austin Hospitals. His training also included a year at the prestigious Cambridge University Hospital, renowned for its state-of-the-art treatment of aortic aneurysms and treatment of chronic venous disease. After being granted Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Vascular Surgery, Iman undertook two short post-fellowship trainings: Skåne University Hospital in Malmö, Sweden, renowned for its complex aortic work, and the Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute in Charlotte, North Carolina, known for its thoracic, aortic, and complex venous expertise. Iman completed his post fellow training at Box Hill Hospital.

Mr Bayat served as Head of Unit – Vascular Surgery at Northern Health (NH) from 2018 until 2023. He was instrumental in the growth of the unit and the establishment of a Centre of Excellence at Northern Health for the management of complex venous disease. An integral component of this service includes the offering of intravascular ultrasound to public patients for the first time in Victoria. The service is supported by an annual Deep Venous Workshop, attended by national and international experts. Mr Bayat continues to serve as Clinical Lead for Complex Venous Disease at Northern Health. Other examples of public service include working with colleagues, Mr Goh and Mr Rangarajan, serving patients at Bendigo Health since 2017.

Iman’s humanitarian passion is in bringing the benefits of modern vascular and endovascular surgery to underserved areas of the globe, by training aspiring vascular surgeons from low- and middle-income countries. Iman had the privilege of being one of the mentors of the first vascular surgeon in Barbados (trained at Northern Health) and is currently training Fiji’s first endovascular surgeon. Iman has travelled to Fiji and Nauru, offering vascular surgery and training. To help aspiring vascular surgeons around the world, Iman and a group of likeminded vascular surgeons founded the Global Vascular Companionship, a program designed to connect mentors and mentees around the world.

Iman lives in Melbourne with his wife and two children. He spends his spare time with his family, gardening and “fixing things” around the house.
